Introduction

Using essential oils is one of the natural ways to reduce stress effectively. As reported by Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan, the oils such as lavender contain volatile substances affecting our nervous system to control our stress level (1). But which of the oil can help with stress better? Is doTERRA Serenity Essential Oil good for you?

In this doTERRA Serenity Essential Oil Review, I will discuss how well it works, some minor drawbacks with it, and where to get the best deal when you buy it online. By the end of this review, you should have a good idea as to whether the doTERRA Serenity Essential Oil is right for you.

How doTERRA Serenity Essential Oil works

This essential oil claims to have a calming and relaxing aroma that soothes your soul and thus provide you a safe haven from life’s daily stressors. According to doTERRA’s alleged claim, this oil supposes to give you following benefits:

  • Leave a peaceful feeling
  • Creates a perfect escape with its calming, renewing fragrance
  • Lessens feelings of tension and calms emotions
  • Promotes relaxation and a restful sleeping environment
  • Calm a restless baby or child
  • Help reduce the worry and stress

This oil claims to consists of following ingredients:

  • Lavender Flower
  • Sweet Marjoram Leaf
  • Roman Chamomile Flower
  • Ylang Ylang Flower
  • Hawaiian Sandalwood essential oils
  • Vanilla Bean Absolute

Supposedly, you may use the oil in following ways as the company suggests:

  • Apply to bottoms of feet at bedtime to help wind down before going to sleep.
  • Add 2–3 drops into a warm bath with Epsom salts to create a peaceful, renewing aroma.
  • Diffuse to help promote relaxation and decrease stress.
  • Apply to an aromatherapy necklace to help reduce anxious feelings throughout the day
  • Apply one to two drops to the desired area. Dilute with doTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil to minimize any skin sensitivity.

Although it seems that you may use this oil in different ways, there are still some cautions you should know. The company reminds you its oil may cause skin sensitivity and you should keep it away from children. That’s why you should also avoid contact with eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas. Also, it advises you to consult with your doctor first if you’re pregnant, nursing, or under a doctor’s care.

Of course, the science behind this essential oil seems very impressive. But does it actually work as advertised? The rest of this review will be devoted to what others have experienced using this oil.

My thoughts on doTERRA Serenity Essential Oil

Before writing this post, I already know that essential oil is an effective stress reliever. Because I did some related research before when writing my another article called “What Are Natural Ways To Reduce Stress And Anxiety?“. At that time, I tried to search for research papers that are related to both the oil and stress relief. I then found that there are actually some papers showing essential oil can reduce stress.

Those papers also try to explain how the oil control or reduce our stress level. But, I’m not going to discuss it here in detail. Because those explanations involve complicated human biology knowledge. It is hard for those without related knowledge to understand them. You may not be interested in them as well. So, I decide to spare you the details 🙂

Although essential oils do help with stress, I’m not sure which of the oils do a great job in terms of stress relief effect. Because there are many different oils I can choose from. When I was searching for oil that reduces stress on Amazon, there were lots of them.

At that moment, I tried to narrow down my search and focus those which had a good rating as well as being not too expensive. Then, I found doTERRA Serenity Essential Oil which matches my criteria.

At first, I wasn’t sure about this oil. When I first read its description, it sounded like a scam. To be honest, I initially thought that things like “soothes the soul, providing a safe haven from life’s daily stressors” were quite exaggerated. In other words, I still didn’t believe in it. So, I took a look at its ingredients to determine if the oil is really that good.

By reading its product details, it consists of different flowers, leafs and other essential oil. I also did some literature research and found that some of its ingredients could reduce stress based on scientific evidence. Those ingredients are essential oils from Lavender Flower, Roman Chamomile Flower, and Ylang Ylang Flower. According to Department of Chemistry of the University of Alabama in the US, these flower contains some chemical compounds help control your stress level (2).

I’m going to tell you briefly how the essential oil extracted from these flowers help you reduce stress, according to this university’s research paper.

Lavender Flower oil is very well-known as helping with “anxiety, fluctuating mood states, and feelings of emotional instability” even in clinical trials (2). Apart from these obvious benefits, it can reduce the excessive or agitated behavior, anxiety and depression as well (2). When using it in animal studies, inhalation of lavender has similar anxiety relief effect as other anti-anxiety drugs (2).

Roman Chamomile Flower oil has been “reported to have a calming, relaxing effect and to be mildly sedating” (2) from other research studies.

Ylang Ylang Flower oil has been reported to reduce blood pressure and pulse rate (2). It can also increase attentiveness and alertness in humans by general “harmonization” after inhaling it or absorbing it via skin (2). It consists of a substance called “Linalool” which has been “shown to have a soothing, comforting effect on humans” (2) in other research studies as well.

Since the serenity essential oil contains the above three essential oils, I’m quite sure it can help with your stress as well as other related problems like anxiety based on the scientific evidence. The benefits claimed by doTERRA seems not wrong nor exaggerated. Instead, the oil is quite good.

But still, doTERRA is a multi-level marketing (MLM) company. Personally, I don’t trust MLM very much. Even though this oil seems to be fine, this doesn’t mean other products from this company are good as well. Because MLM always exaggerate products and certainly some of the products are just really bad. My advice? Pay extra attention when dealing with MLM. Then you will find some products that really help you.

What others think about doTERRA Serenity Essential Oil

After reading my thoughts on doTERRA Serenity Essential Oil, you may want to know what others think about it. Actually, it seems that many people like using this oil and think it is an effective stress reliever. There are 534 customer reviews about it on Amazon and its average rating is 4.4 out of 5 stars. I’m going to summarize why they like it. Of course, some people don’t like it due to one drawback and I will also mention it later.

People who actually use this oil report some really good experiences on Amazon.

First, people find that using this oil can help improve their sleeping quality. One person called Semper Fidelis on Amazon comment that previously she had a very hard time to sleep at night. After using a few drops of the oil every night, she finds that she now has a very good sleep and also don’t need to take sleeping pills anymore. She suggests that you will need about 5mL of this oil every month if you use it every night.

The oil can even improve children’s sleeping quality. One person named A. Stewart on Amazon owns two children. After she used the oil on her body, her boy climbed into her arms and fell fast asleep within about five minutes. She even put a drop of the oil in a tablespoon of almond oil and gave her daughter a hand and foot rub. Her daughter then slept well that night.

Second, people who use the oil comment that the oil calms their nerves and reduce stress. The oil is said to be very soothing. A stay-at-home mom called PandaGirl mention that this oil helps her ease her stress when taking care of her children. She can calm herself down when dealing with anger and frustration caused by her children. Some people who suffer from anxiety claim that they don’t need to take anti- anxiety drugs like Ambien and Effexor after using the oil. This is explained by the previously mentioned research paper. They claim that the oil is a better alternative to taking drugs.

Third, the oil smells nice. People recommend that this oil is suitable for being used in a diffuser. Because the oil is said to have a very pungent smell out of the bottle and works great with a diffuser. A person called Mike comment that its smell is still strong even though adding only 4 drops in about 200ml of water in his diffuser. He suggests that using 3 drops is perfect for bedtime and 2 drops during the daytime.

However, this serenity oil does have one drawback. The drawback is it has a very strong smell if you don’t dilute it. Some people claims that they have some headache due to the strong smell. This also means you can use the oil for a longer time if you only use very small amount of the oil. If every time you dilute it with water or other types of oil like coconut oil, you will not suffer from a headache.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Improve sleeping quality even if you suffer from insomnia
  • Reduce stress and anxiety effectively
  • Soothing and relaxing
  • Smell nice
  • Children can also get these benefits
  • Very suitable to be used in a diffuser

Cons:

  • Very strong smell if you don’t dilute it

My Evaluation

The main focus of this part is to evaluate if this product can relieve stress effectively. My evaluation is based on 4 criteria, which are scientific evidence support, affordability, effectiveness, and practicality.

Scientific evidence support
★★★★
There are some research studies showing that essential oils like lavender could reduce stress. Of course, there are still rooms for scientists to explore why they work.

Affordability
★★★★
Although the oil is not expensive when compared to others costing $50 or more, this oil is not cheap too. But the price is still reasonable.

Effectiveness
★★★★★
Surprisingly, many people report they feel much more relaxed after using this oil. It is an effective stress reliever.

Practicality
★★★★★
It is very easy to use the oil. You can use it every day. You don’t need to do much preparation before using the oil.

Conclusion

To conclude, if you’re stressed and want some natural ways to reduce stress, doTERRA Serenity Essential Oil can do a lot to help relieve stress and anxiety. Apart from stress and anxiety relief effect, it can also improve your sleeping quality and it is very soothing. If you want to try a natural stress reliever, then you should consider using this oil.

  1. Hi Anthony
Thanks for a very helpful article on essential oils. I am a believer of natural therapies and I do recommend using them on my own site. I use lavender oil on my wrists for a good sleep at night. I would caution anyone who has small kids to not use this oil on their hands. Babies tend to put their hands in their mouths and I dont think that is a good idea with this oil. Loved this site and I will be coming back!
