There are different types of herbal tea that calm nerves. I think you may hear about some of them already. But, I’m not going to write about the western ones. Instead, I’m going to tell you about herbal tea from Chinese that could reduce stress. It is called “sweet wheat and red dates tea”.
In this post, I’m going to briefly explain how Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views stress and what Sweet wheat and red dates tea is. I will then tell you about how to make the herbal tea by yourself. To be honest, it’s very easy to make and it tastes good.
How Traditional Chinese Medicine views stress
Unlike Western medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine views stress very differently (1).
TCM view stress as an emotional disease as well, which is called “情志病” (Mandarin: qíng zhì bìng) in Chinese. TCM believes that our bodies contain seven types of emotions, which are happiness, angry, worry, yearning, sad, fear and afraid. If any of the emotions become too extreme such as being too sad for a very long time, this will cause internal injury (in Chinese we call it “內傷”, Mandarin: nèi shāng) to our bodies. Thus, this makes us ill like headaches, dizzy and insomnia.
According to TCM, the root cause of stress is from the “sad liver” (in Chinese we call it “傷心肝”, Mandarin: shāng xīn gān) in a body (2). The “sad liver” doesn’t mean that the liver in the body feels sad. It means that there is less blood flowing in the nervous system due to stress. Because ancient Chinese think that the “liver” is in the nervous system and it is responsible for storing blood and adjusting blood volume.
Here is the kicker: Sweet wheat and red dates tea
I bet you are wondering what Sweet wheat and red dates tea is. Because it doesn’t seems to make any sense to you. Be patient, my friend! I’m going to tell you about it very soon and how it could be a stress reliever!
So, what is that herbal tea? Sweet wheat and red dates tea is a type of herbal tea that consists of wheat, licorice root, red dates, brown sugar, and water. In Chinese, we called it “甘麥紅棗茶” (Mandarin: gān mài hóng zǎo chá). “甘” means licorice root; “麥” means wheat; “紅棗” means red dates and “茶” means tea. That’s why it is called Sweet wheat and red dates tea.
By looking at the name you can easily estimate that the herbal tea is just a mixture of these ingredients. So, it’s easy to make.
You may be wondering how this herbal tea could reduce stress. Because you may not know how these ingredients are related to reducing stress. Yes, I agree that at first glance it doesn’t make any sense. But, don’t worry! I’m going to tell you how it could reduce stress!
This herbal tea could reduce stress because of the functions of the wheat, red dates and licorice root. According to TCM, red dates can enhance blood volume in the “liver” and are believed to alleviate stress (2). Wheat and licorice root are believed to make you more healthy and good for your heart and spleen (2). So, if you’re a woman who suffers from period pain, you can drink this herbal tea as well because it is believed to help relieve the pain.
